No trees were harmed in the creation of this blog; however, a significant number of electrons were slightly inconvenienced.

The most important thing for anyone who runs a website is foot fall, well page hits anyway. You might have the most impressive design with the best content, but if no one visits your site then what is the point?

The majority of first visits to a website are via a search engine, closely followed by social bookmarks (twitter, facebook, etc). Making sure that your site is listed on the latter is something that you can a mange yourself. However ensuring that your site is listed on all the major search engines is another matter. There are a few tools that can help you, one of which gives you everything you need to ensure that all the major engines know about you.

The plugin is called “All in one Webmaster” and it provides you with all the tools you need to lay claim to your website with Google, Yahoo, Bing, Alexa and Blog Catalog and Facebook insights. Each of those services requires that you prove you own the website, normally it requires you to upload a file to your server or to enter a special line of code into each of your pages. For the seasoned web programmer this is a simple matter, however for someone who doesn’t like or want to edit their code it can be more complicated. Some blog hosting packages do not allow you to upload custom files.

All in one Webmaster does the work for you, you simply enter the code provided by each of the services into the relevant box and the ‘special code’ is created on each page for you. To help you find each of the services (to set-up your account) there is a link along side each of the boxes in the control panel.

Once you have completed the set-up there is nothing more you need to do, as far as the search engines are concerned you own the website (along as you don’t disable the plugin). Each of the engine’s provide you with various extra tools to make sure that your site stays in the best of conditions (page errors, tips to speed up your site, etc). I will be writing a set of instructions on Google Webmaster and Analytics at a later date, so keep an eye out.
