Just five short days ago I wrote a short article asking you all if you had remembered? Many hundreds of thousands of people stood still and remembered the sacrifice of all those who have died in the name of their country and those who died as civilians. From London to Sydney and all the places in between people took time out of their busy lives to honour their dead, yet last night a small few acted in such a way to desecrate the memories of those who gave everything.

Last night in Londonderry several Poppy Wreaths were stolen from a war memorial in the centre of the city. The Poppies were found at around 3:00am this morning in the Bogside where they had been burned against the ‘Free Derry’ sign. So far leaders from both sides of the community in Londonderry have stood up to denounce the incident.

I only hope that the offending people are found and made to perform some sort of menial community service for a long period of time, until they learn some respect!

They Should Be Remembered

In my previous post I placed the words of Laurence Binyon, his ‘Fall the Fallen’ poem is perhaps one of the most well-known of all the War Poems. This time I will leave words that have been attributed to John Maxwell Edmonds, the Kohima Epitaph is written on the top of the Kohima 2nd Division Memorial in Burma. The memorial stands to honour the Allied dead who stood against the 10,000 men of the Japanese 15th Army. The words of the Kohima Epitaph state very plainly (in my opinion) the respect that should be given to all those who fight the good fight.

‘When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For their tomorrow, we gave our today.”
The Kohima Epitaph.
